April Vacation 2010

We spent this years vacation in Plymouth Mass. Dave and I were a little unsure of how the kids would respond to visiting many historic sites but they handled it like pros. We visited Plymouth Rock, The Plantation, the Mayflower, the pilgrim burial site and many statues and monuments. The highlight of the trip for the kids was the hotel; The John Carver Inn. The pool and hot tub were a replica of the Mayflower with a pretty large water slide. Dave and I were thrilled that we checked out just as a LARGE group of 7th grade students were arriving :-) on a field trip.

This monument represents the National Day of Mourning. It is celebrated by the Native People each year on Thanksgiving. They mourn and pray here, as opposed to eating, for the ancestors whose lives were taken as the colonists settled in the 1600's. A very different story then the traditional Thanksgiving many of us were taught.

Aboard the Mayflower

This monument is The Founding Fathers. It represents the struggles the colonists went through as they tried to make money for the King of England who they had been hired by. Many of the historical role players told us repetitively that Plymouth was "a god-forsaken land".

...and finally the ROCK. Although boring to look at, it is interesting to note that it used to be 4 times the size it is now. Over the years people have chopped away pieces of it for souvenirs, hence why in the 1950s a huge protective barrier was placed around it.
